As the Vietnam War causes fissures in a Maryland town, Ryder is visited by draft-dodging older brother Robert Downey Jr. who disrupts her high school graduation. She then falls for Downey’s pacifist friend Kiefer Sutherland, who’s at odds with hawkish dad Bruce Dern. Joanna Cassidy and Mariette Hartley costar as the respective mothers in this feature directorial debut for Thompson, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of On Golden Pond.
