Welles’ own affinity for magic tricks was celebrated onscreen by acolyte Jaglom in his writing/directing debut. NYC kid Sylvia Zapp is entranced by magician Welles, and grows up to be flower child Tuesday Weld, remaining in a bubble of self-created fantasy with his spirit still an influence as she weighs the attentions of swains Jack Nicholson and Phil Proctor. Gwen Welles, making her film debut here, would make her final feature with Jaglom two decades later.
