In this moving adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s novel, a young ingénue (Judith Chemla) living in the idyllic surroundings of her family’s chateau anticipates a charmed future with a viscount (Swann Arlaud); but as seasons change and her love is betrayed, she struggles to affirm independence from her family and society as her fortunes take a downturn. Treating his material with tactile elegance, acclaimed director Stephane Brizé (The Measure of a Man) uses judicious Academy framing and epistolary interludes to suggest a rich inner life at every turn.
