Bertolucci was 20 years old when he served as assistant director on Pasolini’s debut film, an experience he described like being present “at the birth of cinema.” Indeed, Pasolini’s still-bracing neorealist vision of a pimp whose business is threatened proved influential for its use of non-professional actors and Catholic imagery, blending the sacred and the profane.
