Kicking off the ’70s Disaster Movie cycle, blue-chip producer Ross Hunter scored his last big-screen success—and his only Best Picture Oscar nomination—with Seaton adapting and directing the runaway hit based on Arthur Hailey’s novel. An all-star cast (Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset, George Kennedy, plus Oscar-winning Helen Hayes) is alternately up in the air and braving blizzard conditions, with composer Alfred Newman’s final score pumping up the bomb-threat suspense and relationship dramas.
