After a Marine platoon is ambushed by Chinese troops during the Korean War, Sergeant Sidney Poitier is left in charge and faces challenges from more battle experienced Alan Ladd and from an unreconstructed racist squad member. The USMC became racially integrated in 1949, well ahead of American society but during post-production the first lunch-counter sit-ins occurred in North Carolina, putting integration on the cultural front burner.
