On location in the in-transition NYC of the late 1970s, Bates once again won filmgoers’ hearts, this time conveying rumpled sexiness as a SoHo artist courting Jill Clayburgh, still finding herself after she’s abandoned by husband Michael Murphy. Paul Mazursky’s screenplay was named the year’s best by the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle; Oscar nominations went to the script, the film itself, and Clayburgh, for a signature performance.
