The uncut version of this racy pre-Code provocation presents screen icon Barbara Stanwyck at her most alluring and punchy best in the torrid tale of a woman bootstrapping herself out of Pennsylvania poverty and into NYC luxury—stepping on (and over) John Wayne and Douglass Dumbrille, among others, in the process. Keep an eye out for one of the best visual motifs in movie history, and for the star’s gowns by legendary costume designer Orry-Kelly.
