Screened June 21–July 11, 2019

Gorgeously restored for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots that marked the effective beginning of America’s Gay Liberation Movement, this richly textured documentary surveys the subcultural enclaves that had been advancing social change since the 1920s. Blending moving and humorous personal testimony with archival footage, Before Stonewall remains a crucial historical document exploring forms of resilience and resistance from the covert cruising codes of the ’30s to the lesbian paperback boom in the ’50s, through to the eponymous landmark event.
