A half-decade into his own career, Fassbinder playfully dove into the fractiousness of making a movie. Von Trotta plays film production manager Fassbinder’s adulterous wife, whose affair is just one instance of bed-hopping as the film’s finances stalls and the crew bivouacs at a hotel. Also hunkered down and acting up: Fassbinder faves Kurt Raab and Ulli Lommel, Lou Castel as the mercurial director, and Hanna Schygulla and Eddie Constantine as the project’s stars.
