Predating Hammer Films’ takes on literature’s female vampire template Carmilla (which also screen in this series), producer Raymond Eger engaged hot young helmer Vadim for an update of the classic tale. Vadim commenced a fruitful collaboration with cinematographer Claude Renoir and cast then-wife Annette Strøyberg as a name’s-the-same Carmilla descendant, getting in touch with her roots to go on the prowl for cousin Mel Ferrer’s fiancée Elsa Martinelli.
