As producer, Delon unearthed this real-life gangster story, got backing from the titular hat company, and landed fellow superstar Jean-Paul Belmondo to play alongside him. Once upon a time in Marseilles (circa the 1930s) hoods Belmondo and Delon become crime lords with an empire spanning everything from gambling to fish. The spiffy production sports costume design by Jacques Fonteray (Barbarella) and a score by Claude Bolling (California Suite).
