Getting Kurt Vonnegut’s satirical novel on film was a challenge both Rudolph and Bruce Willis were eager to meet, and the resultant movie shows them both taking creative risks. Midwestern auto dealership proprietor Willis keeps smiling even as things become unmoored with wife Barbara Hershey and son Lukas Haas, mistress Glenne Headly, colleague Nick Nolte, et al. Vonnegut’s recurring Kilgore Trout character is played by the great Albert Finney.
