Paul Newman had developed the project, and ultimately Altman invited Rudolph to join him in freely adapting a play by Arthur Kopit as a revisionist American history pageant. In the late 19th century, Buffalo Bill Cody (Newman) shores up his touring Wild West show, and mythmaking, by giving Sitting Bull (Frank Kaquitts) a platform. With Burt Lancaster, Geraldine Chaplin as Annie Oakley, and Pat McCormick (of Smokey and the Bandit) as President Grover Cleveland.
