Blier won his first César Award for his offbeat original screenplay, a black comedy in which he paired frequent star Gérard Depardieu and his own father Bernard Blier as, respectively, a needy Parisian and the disenchanted police inspector upstairs—who soon become strangely male-bonded with hapless serial murderer Jean Carmet. The top-flight cast also includes Carole Bouquet, Geneviève Page, Liliane Rovère, and (unbilled, in the opening scene) Michel Serrault.
