Wyler applied his industry clout to get Theodore Dreiser’s compassionate novel Sister Carrie made into a movie, and as usual got the right actors to make it play. Jennifer Jones leaves a small town for 1890s Chicago and finds romance with salesman Eddie Albert—and romantic obsession with well-off married man Laurence Olivier. With a score by David Raksin and costumes by Edith Head that pull the audience in deeper.
