Rivette masters an upbeat application of his linked themes of creativity and feminine intrigue, sending newfound kindred spirits Juliet Berto and Dominique Labourier through the looking glass for a film-within-the-film that draws from James’ short story “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes.” Featuring Barbet Schroeder, and Marie-France Pisier and Bulle Ogier, who reunite in this series’ Sérail, directed by Rivette’s co-writer Eduardo de Gregorio.
