Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria is like a fugue for three women — an older actress Maria (Juliette Binoche), her devoted assistant Valentine (Kristen Stewart), and a younger actress Jo-Ann (Chloe Grace Moretz). Eidinger plays Klaus Diesterweg, the assertive stage director who convinces Maria to star in a revival of the play that once made her famous, seemingly a drama of two women, lovers of different ages. In this production Maria would play the senior woman, and Jo-Ann, who is not known to Maria, but whose scandals Valentine has followed, would be the ingenue. Maria is not certain this arrangement will work. Most of the action takes place in and around the village of Sils Maria high in the Swiss Alps.
