In another of his underrated true-crime dramatizations, Fleischer’s take on Meyer Levin’s novel based on the 1924 Leopold and Loeb murder that shocked America stars Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman as the two “thrill killers,” with Welles in his element as attorney Jonathan Wilk (the fictionalization of legendary real-life lawyer Clarence Darrow), mounting a defense that he comes to sense may not hold. The trio shared the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
