Hewing closely to James’ novella—which had been recommended to him by Orson Welles—Bogdanovich took on the challenge of making his first costume drama/comedy of manners. His onscreen and offscreen leading lady Cybill Shepherd took on the title role of an American abroad (with mother Cloris Leachman) who conducts herself without guile or pretense and thereby risks social censure.
