Long-suffering baseball fan Robert Shafer is reincarnated as younger/hunkier player Tab Hunter after making a deal with The Devil, aka Applegate (Ray Walston), so that his team will finally win. Abbott’s brassy hit Broadway musical got the top-of-the-line Warner Bros. treatment with most of his stage troupe encoring, including choreographer Fosse, who mambos onscreen with Gwen Verdon (with whom he became inseparable personally and professionally).
