In Depression-era America, a beautiful fugitive named Grace arrives at a small town in the Rocky Mountains on the run from the mob. Offering to work in exchange for asylum, Grace is welcomed in by the locals. But as they come to expect more favors from her, Grace hides a dangerous secret from them. A withering indictment of American social values, written and directed by a man who has never set foot in America (it was the first installment of his scrapped USA: Land of Opportunities trilogy), Lars von Trier’s Dogville is an ambitious provocation. With an all-star cast led by Nicole Kidman, this epic Brechtian drama is a raw examination of small-town hypocrisy and prejudice.
