At once playing to his strengths and playing against expectations, Pacino delivered one of his finest screen performances, keenly attuned to Mike Newell’s daringly low-key take on an undercover-with-the-mob tale. Pacino plays a mid-level Mafiosi with whom FBI agent Johnny Depp embeds himself, as time with the Family costs him time with the family. Former film critic Paul Attanasio earned an Oscar nod for his adaptation of the agent’s memoir.
