Reteaming with two of his The Dirty Dozen leads, Aldrich elicits one of Marvin’s best performances, as a his-own-man hobo charting a collision course with fire-breathing train conductor Ernest Borgnine, notorious for his murderous treatment of stowaways. The director packed a punch with this Depression-era drama, maximizing breathtaking Oregon locations and thrilling stunt work on and around vintage locomotives. Hang on for an edge-of-your-seat climax and a terrific adieu!
