Opening the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Asghar Farhadi’s crime thriller was met with mixed reactions but much critical praise for the lead performances, with The A.V. Club‘s A.A. Dowd writing that “Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz help break Cannes’ opening night curse.” The story follows Buenos Aires resident Laura (Cruz) returning to her hometown outside of Madrid for her younger sister’s wedding, reconnecting with an old friend (Bardem). When Laura’s teenage daughter goes missing, it sets off a chain of events and old secrets come to the surface.
