Huston made a potent return to form after a string of critical and box office disappointments. Fat City sees him taking on Leonard Gardner’s screenplay adaptation of his own novel. An unvarnished view of boxing unfolds, as seen from the cheaper seats and fought from the lower depths, while comer Jeff Bridges scales the ring card and seasoned Stacy Keach may be on his way down. Also featuring Candy Clark in her film debut and an Oscar-nominated Susan Tyrrell. The result is Huston’s first unequivocal success in the New Hollywood era.
