Struggling impresario Jean Gabin has the bright idea of reviving the cancan and winds up creating the Moulin Rouge in Jean Renoir’s expansive and vivacious backstage musical. The cool, contained demeanor of Gabin contrasts beautifully with the mind-blowing vitality of the dancers—they give him (and us) life.
