One of the late, great Chantal Akerman’s strangest and most vibrant films, this pop confection-cum-capitalist critique is set in an underground shopping mall that’s all surface brightness and spiritual desolation. The elaborate romantic complications of the film’s plot recall the iconic musicals of Jacques Demy, but with a wink-wink post-modern twist.
