In training their documentary lens upon a mother and daughter at home, the Maysles brothers courted controversy, secured cult status, and reintroduced startled audiences to Edith Bouvier Beale and Little Edie. Born and raised in wealth before going well off the grid, the duo were by the 1970s inhabiting a world of their own in a ramshackle East Hampton mansion amidst 28 rooms and what looked to be a like number of cats.
