The first of Téchiné’s seven (so far) collaborations with Catherine Deneuve elevated his critical standing and brought the actress a César Award nomination, in her only screen pairing with Patrick Dewaere. The two stars play out a start/stop romance as their characters try to surmount class differences and let go of the past. Sabine Haudepin (once the little girl in Jules and Jim) also received a César nod, for her portrayal of Dewaere’s sister.
