At the eponymous run-down Parisian haunt (shot on studio sets), prostitute Arletty and her pimp Louis Jouvet cross paths with lovers Annabella and Jean- Pierre Aumont in a suicide pact. Carné’s evocative slice of poetic realism was co-written by Jean Aurenche, later a screenwriter for multiple Tavernier titles and a subject of the director’s Safe Conduct.
