The title gathering is a Yorkshire couple’s 40th anniversary, occasioning the return home of sons Alan Bates, Brian Cox, and James Bolam—but it soon becomes evident that  there is cause for their long separation. Anderson had directed the original 1969 Royal Court Theatre staging of David Storey’s powerful piece, and for the film version he recruited the original cast as well as frequent Ken Russell cinematographer Dick Bush.
