After indie breakthroughs, Nolan successfully helmed his first picture for a major studio with this estimable redo of a 1997 Norwegian suspense drama, shot by his frequent cinematographer Wally Pfister. Adding a fresh portrait to his gallery of compromised lawmen, Pacino loses sleep and sweats out the Alaskan chill and midnight sun as a visiting detective who makes a fatal mistake on a case, forcing him to parry with both wily killer Robin Williams and tenacious local cop Hilary Swank.
