The titular inn is found in the French countryside, where an extended peasant family’s spiteful ways and airtight loyalty make for a cold welcome to their naive Parisian cousin. Becker’s second feature was the first French film to get a U.S. release after the Liberation, and its decidedly ambiguous portrait of Vichy-era attitudes made it a classic of the Occupation era.
