Berri achieved international success with this full-bodied two-part version of Marcel Pagnol’s story. Gérard Depardieu is Jean, a hunchbacked dreamer who inherits a farm and dedicates himself to making a living from it. But smiling-cobra landowner Yves Montand dedicates himself to crushing Jean’s resolve, assisted by conflicted stooge Daniel Auteuil, who won the César Award for Best Actor. Bruno Nuytten’s cinematography and Jean-Claude Petit’s music enhance a transcendent moviegoing experience.
