In the first of their three fortuitous director/star teamings, Wyler piloted Bette Davis to a Best Actress Oscar as a 19th-century Southern belle—costumed by Orry-Kelly—who drives away fiancé Henry Fonda with her mendacity and then plots to win him back. The cast includes George Brent, Donald Crisp, Fay Bainter (who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar as Davis’ stalwart aunt), plus Eddie “Rochester” Anderson and Matthew “Stymie” Beard as father and son.
