The virtues of France’s Communist party are exhorted through vignettes, made in tandem by the directors, of workers being aided as well as via newsreel footage and direct addresses from party members. Renoir—who appears as a bistro owner—oversaw the production with Le Chanois, while his nephew Claude and wife Marguerite were among the cinematographers and editors, respectively; Cartier-Bresson went on to working with Renoir as assistant director on The Rules of the Game.
