For their transgressive first movie together, Almodóvar turned Banderas loose on location in a vibrant Madrid as an Islamic fundamentalist picking up the scent of gay Iranian prince Imanol Arias, who takes refuge with sex-addicted singer Cecilia Roth (also a favorite of the filmmaker’s) while the latter’s stand-in Marta Fernández Muro tries to escape an abusive home life. Clubbing, orgies, punk-rock concerts—with Almodóvar himself performing—and possibly love ensue.
