France, 1720. Louis XIV is dead and Louis XV is still a child. While France is ruled by the Regent, Philippe d’Orléans (Philippe Noiret), a non-stop hedonist and a truth-telling intellectual, who deals with plotting priests (Jean Rochefort), evil magistrates, military rebels, overwhelming ignorance, and last and least, the peasantry.
