In the wake of the Battle of Verdun, which ended World War I in 1918, Philippe Noiret, the overworked and overextended Commandant, is in charge of identifying the dead before burial. He must meet those searching for the remains of loved ones and builds a friendship with two women (Sabine Azéma, Pascale Vignale) from different social strata as they seek closure.
