In a cast with five leads, Javier Bardem stands out as a straight-laced cop-turned paraplegic basketball star. Keep your eyes peeled for Pilar Bardem (Javier’s mother) as the midwife to pregnant prostitute Penélope Cruz (in her first appearance in an Almodóvar film) in the film’s opening sequence.
