Documentarian Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?, Love, Marilyn) makes her narrative debut with the incisive dramatization of the true story of Mari Gilbert (Amy Ryan), a mother determined to find out what happened to her missing daughter, and the over a dozen missing young women she uncovers along the way. When 20 year-old sex worker Shannan Gilbert disappears, Mari and her other two young daughters (Thomasin McKenzie and Oona Laurence) find little help from local Long Island law enforcement (headed by Gabriel Byrne) but a larger community of mothers, sisters, friends looking for answers about their missing loved ones.

A film by Liz Garbus

A sober chronicle of victimization and empowerment… It’s serious, respectful, gravely melancholic.”
