The preeminent chronicler of domestic discontent in contemporary Russia (Elena, Leviathan) returns with a harrowing portrait of a marriage on the rocks, depicted with commanding intensity. Boris and Zhenya have found new partners but still live together in their apartment with 12-year-old son Alyosha. But when he disappears, they seek the help of a local citizen’s group to find him, as Zvyagintsev observes a society in thrall to both Christian morality and modern technology.

In Russian with English subtitles.

Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar

Official Selection: Cannes Film Festival

A Sony Pictures Classics release.

A film by Andrey Zvyagintsev

Devastating, finely layered… Zvyagintsev’s touch is light as falling snow or horsehair on a violin.”
