Idiosyncratic and diminutive young teen Corey Haim struggles at school but is protected by jock Charlie Sheen and befriended by new girl Kerri Green (fresh from The Goonies). When the latter two are attracted to each other, he wrestles with hurt feelings. Writer/director Seltzer’s heartfelt and generous-spirited movie is warmly lensed by cinematographer Reynaldo Villalobos; Ryder, in her screen debut, is a natural, luminous as the boy’s supportive classmate.
