Newly widowed American opera singer Jill Clayburgh throws herself into a tour of Italy performing Verdi, where she discovers teen son Matthew Barry’s heroin habit and then begins a taboo relationship with him. Circling them is an eclectic cast that includes Roberto Benigni, Fred Gwynne, Tomas Milian, Renato Salvatori, and Alida Valli. Bertolucci takes his cues from the opera motif, accessing a spectrum of emotions and an intoxicating visual opulence.
