Von Trotta won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival for this powerful meditation on how the personal is political. In the first of her seven (so far) collaborations with von Trotta, Barbara Sukowa plays a radical (loosely based on Baader-Meinhof terrorist Gudrun Ensslin) whose combustible relationship with her journalist sister Jutta Lampe re-ignites after she is jailed. (The German title translates as “Days of Lead” in reference to gunfire.)
