Banderas received his first Goya Award (Spain’s Oscars equivalent) nomination for playing a repressed bullfighting trainee who acts out violently and delusionally, opening the door for defense lawyer Assumpta Serna to cozy up to his mentor, retired matador Nacho Martinez—as both share a taste for goring and killing. Clips of movies both classic and not are complemented by the lensing of Almodóvar’s then-regular cinematographer Ángel Luis Fernández.
