The origin of beloved classics “The Trolley Song” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (which was originally much more downbeat before Judy Garland objected), Meet Me in St. Louis remains a treasured holiday classic. Based on a series of short stories by Sally Benson that originally appeared in The New Yorker, the film presents a series of vignettes focusing on the Smith family during various seasons of the year and celebrating the 1904 World’s Fair event. Notorious as the film in which Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli fell in love (which of course begat Liza Minnelli to the world), Meet Me in St. Louis is one of the Golden Age of MGM’s most revered classic musicals.
