For his elegant adaptation of the oft-filmed piece, Resnais returned the Henri Bernstein play to its origins, situating his telling in 1920s Paris and embracing its theatricality. Eight César Award nominations resulted, including for Best Film and Best Director; as the couple separately grappling with her infidelity, Sabine Azéma and Pierre Arditi won Césars. The other man is played by André Dussollier, and Azéma’s concerned cousin is portrayed by Fanny Ardant.
