Part unconventional caper, part dark comedy, part thriller and part detective film, Miami Blues was adapted from a novel by cult crime fiction writer Charles Willeford. Alec Baldwin plays an ex-con just released from prison who immediately takes up his old ways upon release, but with more urgency and with higher consequences. Hot on his tail is Fred Ward in a delightful performance, playing an out of shape police officer who knows he’s got his man, but can’t seem to connect him to anything concrete. Add to this Jennifer Jason Leigh as a small-town Florida girl who’s been dabbling in sex work in Miami while finishing her college degree. She falls in love with our antihero, bringing some naivete and genuine sunniness, at times tempering his poor impulse control and entrenched misanthropy. Cinematography by legend Tak Fujimoto.
